Let me make the argument for why Sergeant Pepper was understood to be a concept album by most of the people who received it, the audi, fellow musicians and fans and that kind of thing. None of his songs had anything to do with the Sergeant Pepper concept. His songs could've gone on any of the Beatles records, Revolver or Magical Mystery Tour, whatever. John Lennon always argued that it was a concept album at all. There are other albums that you could go back to, even from people like Frank Sinatra or John Coltrane that were sort of concept albums. Even if you believe it's a concept album, it may not be the first concept album, certainly not in popular music. Now is Sergeant Pepper, the first concept album in the history of rock music? Well. For reasons that we discussed in the last video although when M64 had been recorded it does, in fact end up on this album. In the fall of 66, you remember as we said in the last video, that Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields were supposed to be part of that, but turns out that they couldn't be. So we talked about in the last video of parts of what were recorded in December, as early as December 1966, when they got back from their little vacation.
So let's dig into that album, a little bit more. And an album that had seemed like at the time, the whole world stopped for a minute.

An album that would in, in many ways represent the full arrival of the artist approach to doing rock and pop music. In June of 1967, The Beatles released, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
